WhenIfirstdecidedtowriteabookonstringtheory-morethantenyearsago-mymemoriesofmystudentyearsweremuchmorevividthantheyaretoday.Still-Irememberthatoneofthegreatestpleasureswasfindingatextthatmadeadifficultsubjectaccessible-andIhopedtoprovidethesameforstringtheory.Thus-myfirstpurposewastogiveacoherentintroductiontostringtheory-basedonthePolyakovpathintegralandconformalfieldtheory.Nopreviousknowledgeofstringtheoryisassumed.Idoassumethatthereaderisfamiliarwiththecentralideasofgeneralrelativity-suchasmetricsandcurvature-andwiththeideasofquantumfieldtheorythroughnon-Abeliangaugesymmetry.Originallyafullcourseofquantumfieldtheorywasassumedasaprerequisite-butitbecameclearthatmanystudentswereeagertolearnstringtheoryassoonaspossible-andthatothershadtakencoursesonquantumfieldtheorythatdidnotemphasizethetoolsneededforstringtheory.Ihethereforetriedtogiveaself-containedintroductiontothosetools.Asecondpurposewastoshowhowsomeofthesimplestfour-dimensionalstringtheoriesconnectwithpreviousideasforunifyingthe
